Sunset at Weipa far North Queensland on the Gulf of Carpentaria.
It is a long way to the mining town of Weipa Queensland. Back in 2010 I had planed a photographic safari for 3 months covering over 19,000km, this trip would start in Melbourne and visit Mildura, Flinders Ranges, Birdsville, Longreach, Cairns, Cape York, Darwin, The Kimberley, Broome, Alice Springs, Adelaide and back to Melbourne.
After Driving as far north as you can in Australia (Cape York) I was Heading south back to Cairns and on one of my usual vehicle inspections, I noticed that water leaked in to the rear differential, this needed mechanical assistance immediately.
The nearest major garage was only 150km out of my way (on rough dirt roads 2.5 hours travel time if I was lucky) the alternative garage was over 550km away. I did not think my Nissan 4wd would make it on those terrible roads, so I made the detour to Weipa and had the water removed from the differential.
If you breakdown in the outback it could cost you thousands of dollars to be towed back to the nearest garage, so it is a no brainer to constantly inspect your car while traveling on these extreme outback roads, on this occasion it did pay off and I captured a stunning sunset at the Weipa Beach which I would have missed otherwise.
